The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) has elected Australian Science Media Centre CEO, Dr Susannah Eliott, as a Fellow.

Susannah is amongst 33 newly elected Fellows who have been elected for “their game-changing contributions” in a wide range of fields including science communication. She is passionate about increasing the amount, accessibility and visibility of research in the media and, as CEO of the Australian Science Media Centre (AusSMC), has been a driving force in improving access to trusted information for all Australians.

Following a PhD and early research career in cell biology, Susannah turned her interest to science communication, obtaining a postgraduate diploma in journalism from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). After five years in Sweden as Deputy Director for Communications at the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (a UN-affiliated environmental research organisation headquartered in Stockholm), she returned to Australia to help establish the Australian Science Media Centre in Adelaide. In 2016 she was awarded an honorary doctorate in science communication from the University of Adelaide.

The AusSMC supports the accurate reporting of science in the media and runs the breaking science news platform, Scimex.org, used by hundreds of research institutions and close to 2,500 journalists in Australia and overseas. The Centre is part of a growing global network of science media centres that includes SMCs in the UK, Spain, Germany, New Zealand and Taiwan.

Peter Yates AM FTSE,  Chairman of AusSMC said on behalf of the AusSMC Board: ”Congratulations to Susannah on her election to fellowship of ATSE. It is a wonderful recognition of the enormous contribution that Susannah has made to science communication for our nation. Susannah will make a great contribution to the Fellowship.”

“It is an honour to be elected as a Fellow of ATSE,” said Susannah. “As someone who works with, but outside of, the academic community and very much behind the scenes, it never occurred to me that I could one day be an academy Fellow. But ATSE values expertise in many areas of endeavour and not just within academia. It’s a wonderful recognition.”
