Media training for scientists

Available now

If you don't feel quite media-ready or you want to improve your communication skills further, we provide a number of training activities to help you get science media savvy.

Here is what other researchers have said about our workshops:

"I highly recommend this workshop to anyone who ever wants to communicate their work effectively"

"Completely changed my perspective on science communication. For the better.”

"Feeling encouraged, inspired + much less daunted. Thank you!"

We offer a range of media training workshops including:

  • Research in the mainstream media - How to deliver your story is a way that the news media wants.
  • Social media for researchers - Get social and build a career-boosting online presence, while staying safe online.
  • Interview BootCamp - Prepare for media interviews by being put in the hot seat for a mock interview. This in-depth workshop includes detailed, written feedback.
  • Communicating contentious research - A focus on the specific challenges faced by researchers who work in controversial and/or politically divisive fields.
  • Video for researchers - Learn how to give good 'zoom' interviews and how to film and edit visually compelling footage all on a mobile phone.
  • Training for diverse experts - Tailored media training programs for women in STEM, and for experts from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds.
  • Indigenous Media Mentoring Program for First Nations researchers - 2 days of intensive media training to competitively selected Indigenous scientists and researchers.  More info on this program is available here.

Foundation and Gold partners of the AusSMC are able to access tailored media training. Organisations that are Affiliates of the AusSMC have access to one combined Affiliate training session each year.

If your organisation is not a supporter or Affiliate, or if you would like additional training, we can offer tailored media training.
